As the autumn evenings start to draw in, what better than to settle down with an audiobook? Here are some that I’ve recorded recently:
Republic by Alice Hunt, published by Faber & Faber. A brilliantly written account of the Interregnum of the 1650s. It’s a fascinating and excellently-researched book charting both the characters and the social and political history of this period.
The Children of Lingfield House by Titti Marone (Bonnier Books); and The Lost Daughter by R.P.G. Colley (Soundings) – both historical fiction, set during and after the Second World War; Marone’s book tells the heartbreaking true story of a group of children, brought to the UK from the Continent to heal both physically and psychologically after enduring the horrors of the Holocaust. Colley’s touching and tragic novel is about a daughter’s quest to uncover her mother’s dark secrets from her time as a young woman in Nazi Germany.
The Cursed Writer, by the brilliant Holly Hepburn, is the second in a series I have loved narrating. It’s a rollercoaster of a ride as Harry White takes up where Sherlock Holmes left off. The Hound of the Baskervilles has a very worthy successor in this book. Huge fun. Cracking dialogue and fantastic plotting!
As this post goes to press, I’m excited to have started narrating a fantasy series by Vanessa Nelson called Fractured Conclave. Book 1, A Usual Suspect, is a thrilling adventure following an incredibly feisty protagonist, Hallie, on her quest to uncover the truth about her friend’s husband’s murder. The world Nelson has created is so detailed and vivid; it was a real joy to narrate this one. I can’t wait for Book 2, A Broken Contract, coming out at the end of November.
